Entry points: the first place your business gets seen

Most businesses spend their energy on the home page while customers arrive somewhere else entirely. How to find your real entry points and design for them.

A common and incorrect assumption: the customer enters through the home page, looks at the menu, reads the about page and then moves on to the services. In reality most visitors never see the home page at all. They arrive from a search result, from a link in an Instagram profile, or on a recommendation from someone they know, and they land directly on an inner page.

That page is the entry point. It is usually the page that has had the least attention.

Find your real entry points

This is not something to guess at; the data is already there. In the landing page report of your analytics tool, sort pages by entries rather than by total views. The result is usually a surprise: an old article, a secondary product page, or a page you had forgotten about brings in the most arrivals.

Every entry point has to do three jobs by itself

A page that works as an entry point cannot lean on the rest of the site, because the visitor may never go to the rest of the site. So every entry point has to stand alone.

  1. Say where this is and what you do — in the top section, with no scrolling required.
  2. Give a reason to trust you: work you have done, a number, a track record, or technical detail that shows you know the job.
  3. Offer one clear next step — and only one. Three calls to action of equal weight mean none at all.

How an entry point differs from a home page

The home page is built for someone who already knows your name and has come to see what you do; its job is to distribute traffic across the site. An entry point is built for someone who has a problem and is looking for a way to solve it; its job is to close one specific loop. That is why the two should not share a structure, and why a campaign landing page should never be the home page.

A home page spreads traffic around; an entry point takes it to a result.

The entry point is not always the website

For a large share of Iranian businesses — and for small businesses in any market where one social platform carries local commerce — the first contact happens on Instagram, or in the answer to a phone enquiry. That is an entry point too, with the same three jobs. If your Instagram profile does not say what you do and how to place an order, it has exactly the weakness of a vague landing page. What matters most is continuity between these points: someone who comes from Instagram to the site should find what they were led to expect.

A simple exercise to start with

  1. Pull your five main entry points out of the data.
  2. For each one, write down the question its visitor arrived with, and what the next step is.
  3. Any page without a clear next step gets one added — just one.
  4. Measure again a month later: what has happened to the exit rate on those same pages.

None of this needs a redesign or an advertising budget. It needs attention paid to where the traffic actually enters — which is usually the cheapest improvement available to a business.
